HPU Goes 'Green' In Second Recyclemania Competition

HIGH POINT, N.C., Feb. 23, 2012 – High Point University showed how green they were last year in the first Recyclemania competition – placing second among all colleges and universities in the state with a total of 73,822 pounds of recyclables. So for the 2012 competition, they are hoping to do even more for the waste reduction and recycling program.

The eight-week challenge, which began on Feb. 5 and runs through April 6, includes more than 575 colleges and universities nationwide.
Troy Thompson, director of Campus Enhancement at HPU, says similar to last year, HPU has set goals to continue to increase recycling on campus, to raise awareness of the recycling program and lower waste generated on campus.

Thompson says he was encouraged by students’ participation last year, and he’s excited to see what the campus can do this year.

“But ultimately, the real goal of this competition is to raise awareness of the comprehensive recycling program we have in place on campus and to increase our recycling efforts while reducing the waste,” Thompson says. “This competition is truly a great way to get everyone involved in these important efforts. By working together, we are making a difference in our environment.”
