HIGH POINT, N.C., Feb. 7, 2012 – High Point was recently flooded with more than 3,000 visitors from out of town for a weekend of education, culture and entertainment, as High Point University hosted its bi-annual Family Weekend, held Feb. 3 through 5.
HPU students and families enjoyed a faculty lecture series, a performance by the North Carolina Dance Theatre, and entertainment by comedian Sean Emery.
Visitors also had the opportunity to attend a Choral Concerts featuring the University Singers, Chapel Choir, and Chamber Singers in the Pauline Theatre, HPU Men’s and Women’s basketball games, Family Bingo, an art exhibit featuring artist Char Norman in the Sechrest Art Gallery and a Family Weekend Worship Service in the Hayworth Chapel.
This year’s faculty lecture series presentations covered benefits of writing instruction, the importance of technology, updates on the School of Health Sciences, trends in the 2012 election and updates on the academic programs and initiatives at the university.
– Dr. Dennis Carroll, provost and vice president of Academic Affairs, provided an update on the academic programs and initiatives currently underway at the university, including the hiring of 50 new faculty members by August 2012.
– Dr. William Carpenter, associate professor of English, presented a lecture on what the HPU English department is going to improve students’ writing skills.
– Wellington DeSouza, vice president for strategic planning in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, presented a lecture on how the short life cycle of technology has made leadership the key to success. He also discussed what this means for HPU and the global process of education.
– Dr. Daniel Erb, dean of the new School of Health Sciences, presented a lecture on the proposed programs, vision, mission, and values of the new School. He also discussed what will make an education from the School of Health Sciences extraordinary.
– Dr. Martin Kifer, assistant professor of political science, presented a lecture covering emerging trends in the 2012 election using data gathered by student interviewers who conducted the High Point University Poll for the Survey Research Center on campus.
