HIGH POINT, N.C., Feb. 16, 2012 – A team of five High Point University students brought home the silver medal from the first North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities Ethics Bowl (NCICU) tournament, hosted at Meredith College in Raleigh.
The NCICU Ethics Bowl is designed to provide an academic experience that increases student awareness about applying ethics in leadership, decision-making, interpersonal relationships and other issues in today’s society. The purpose of the competition is to emphasize the importance of being able to apply ethical standards to situations students inevitably will face as future local, state and national leaders.
The competition, which included a total of 14 student teams hailing from 14 North Carolina independent colleges and universities, focused on the theme “Ethics in the Workplace.” Each team was tasked with presenting their position on a hypothetical case, and substantiating it with ethical principles relating it to business.
The HPU team – Kesley Bomar, Jordan Cohen, Morgan Falls, Carol Holmes and Coty-Jon Jump and advisers Dr. Matthew Brophy and Dr. Amy MacArthur, both assistant professors of philosophy – ended up with a perfect 4-0 record, which qualified them for the final round, where they took second place.
“I couldn’t be prouder of our ethics bowl team,” says Brophy. “They did an extraordinary job, and represented High Point University – on and off the stage – extremely well. Our student team enjoyed themselves thoroughly – not just competing, but talking with other students, making connections with business leaders, mingling at the elegant dinner, and just being included in such a cordial and important experience.”
“We appreciated the opportunity to participate in the inaugural NCICU Ethics Bowl, and we will definitely be participating next year in this valuable event,” says MacArthur, who serves as the HPU Ethics Bowl co-coordinator.
