HIGH POINT, N.C., Jan. 30, 2012 – As part of the Faculty Cultural Enrichment Series, High Point University will feature Dr. Richard Miller, English professor and executive director of the Plangere Writing Center at Rutgers University. The event will be held at 7 p.m. on Feb. 9 at the Francis Auditorium in Phillips Hall on the HPU campus. The event is open to the public.
The faculty series this year, titled “Our On-line Lives,” is exploring the evolution and implications of living online with specific focus on how online technologies affect human relationships.
Miller is engaged in a project, called “Thinking in Public,” which involves exploiting Web 2.0 technologies to showcase what it means to think and write publically with the Web. His focus is on the end of privacy, which he has explored via the Tyler Clementi case, a case of spying and breach of privacy on Rutgers’ own campus.
“Dr. Miller is working at the intersection of literacy and on-line identity,” says Dr. William Carpenter, associate professor of English and director of Composition at HPU. “He is asking questions that are very important to the future of higher education. How is on-line technology changing what we learn and, more importantly, how we learn? Dr. Miller is blazing a new trail for higher education, one that leads us from physical archives to the virtual cloud.”
HPU has previously held additional speakers as part of this faculty enrichment series, including Sherry Turkle, author of “Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other,” and Seth Schiesel, video game critic from the New York Times.
