Psychology Department Attends National Conference in California

HIGH POINT, N.C., Feb. 29, 2012 – Several students and faculty members in the Psychology Department at High Point University recently attended the annual meeting of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology in San Diego, Calif.

Students who attended the conference included Aliya Wilk, Lauren Reese, Lauren Zimmerman, Erika Frey, Nicole Chrysson, Jamie McDonald, Casey Lowth, Kalena Jones, Bill Burke, John Purcell, Wade Rothrock and Travis Spier. The students were accompanied by Dr. Jana Spain, professor of psychology; Dr. Chris Lootens, assistant professor of psychology; Dr. Deb Danzis, associate professor of psychology; and Britni Brewer, a recent graduate from the Psychology Department at HPU.

The department’s trip, which was sponsored by the Psi Chi International Honor Society in Psychology, allowed students to attend numerous presentations related to social, personality and clinical psychology, and attend research presentations with psychologists from other universities throughout the country.

Additionally, the conference featured research presentations by several members of HPU’s department, including a poster by Danzis, titled “How can I leave the baby” Personality predictions of parental separation anxiety”; a research poster by Spain, titled “The narcissist you know: Judgments of adaptive and maladaptive narcissism, interjudge agreement, and relation to daily life experiences”; and Brewer’s research poster, “Pssst, is my personality showing? Exploring Facebook and personality.”

“Our students had opportunities to network and meet professionals with whom they might communicate in the future about research or graduate school plans,” said Lootens. “In particular, attending a national conference of this nature will be very beneficial for students in terms of developing presentation skills, supplementing what they have learned in the classroom, and preparing for graduate study.”
