HIGH POINT, N.C., March 20, 2012 – A team of 13 students from High Point University recently competed in the Harvard National Model United Nations Conference held in Boston. The students are members of the Society for Political and Historical Awareness Club at HPU.
HPU students joined more than 3,500 students from 35 countries around the world to compete in a mock United Nations conference where they discussed and debated a variety of issues in international relations. Two HPU students had the opportunity to represent two of the most recognizable non-governmental organizations in the world – Christine McClung as CARE International and James Kamara as the International Federation of the Red Cross.
For Kamara, participating in the conference gave prime opportunities to practice debating and collaborating skills.
“I enjoyed being able to engage in simulate debate with like-minded people from all over the world,” says Kamara. “It gives life a deeper meaning and shows how blessed we are as students to live and go to school in the United States.”
The team was led by Dr. Renzo Honores, assistant professor of history. In the past three years, HPU has been recognized for winning the Outstanding Delegate Award for non-governmental organizations.
Apart from student discussion on global political issues, the conference also included activities such as crisis simulations, multimedia presentations and guest lectures by distinguished speakers.
Other schools represented at the conference include Yale, West Point, Princeton and Cornell.
