Musical Theatre to Perform Opera Hits

HIGH POINT, N.C., March 13, 2012 – The Department of Music at High Point University will delight audiences with a variety of music and entertainment with its Musical Theatre Workshop Performance at 7:30 p.m. on March 30 in the Pauline Theatre of the Hayworth Fine Arts center. The event is open to the public.

The show will feature music students performing scenes from shows by composer Stephen Schwartz, including “Wicked,” “Children of Eden,” “Rags” and “The Baker’s Wife.”

The second half of the show will be comprised of scenes from “Avenue Q,” “Les Miserables,” “Rent,” “Tick, Tick, Boom, Boom!” and Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide.” There is also a scene from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Love Never Dies” – his sequel to “Phantom of the Opera.”

The pieces were hand chosen as favorites of Dr. Alexa Schlimmer, director of vocal studies at HPU. This event will be her last directing performance of her 28 year career in the HPU theatre department. Accompanist for the show is Marcia Dills, assistant professor of music.

“I love all genres of music, but my heart is on the stage directing and performing in musical theatre and opera,” says Schlimmer, who will have a farewell recital on April 26.
