HIGH POINT, N.C., March 15, 2012 – He’s easily North Carolina’s most recognizable and successful living artist – and High Point University is celebrating Bob Timberlake with a special exhibition in the Sechrest Gallery on campus. The collection, “Seven Decades of Art – 75th Birthday Exhibition,” opened with fanfare on March 14 with a special reception with Timberlake in attendance. It will remain in the gallery through May 5, and it is open to the public.
The exhibition, which also coincides with the Spring High Point Furniture Market and Bob Timberlake’s introduction of a new furniture line, presents 75 of Timberlake’s original paintings, along with many pieces of interesting memorabilia from his career. The show features artwork that spans a lifetime of creativity, from 1942 through 2012 – even including a crayon drawing Timberlake completed at the age of 5, as well as his latest release of “Hydrangeas,” which was completed this year.
HPU students, faculty and staff and members of the local community attended the reception. Representatives from Congressman Howard Coble’s office also were in attendance.
During his speech, Timberlake said he had given up operating five businesses to become an artist. He encouraged students to follow their passion throughout their careers and lives as well.
“If I can get anything across to the students here today, it would be to find something you love to do and do it from your heart,” he said. “Find a way to express yourself and do the thing you love to do the most.”
Timberlake, an American Realist painter who devoted himself to painting at the age of 33, draws his inspiration from people, places and objects that capture his southern heritage by sharing it with the world through his timeless tempera and watercolor paintings. He has received many honors over the years for his work, including the prestigious Albert Schweitzer Medal for Artistry (the only artist to ever receive this award), the American Forestry Award, the North Carolina Public Servant of the Year, the First Iron Eyes Cody Award, the Outstanding Alumnus Award from his alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and named the North Carolina Press Association’s North Carolinian of the Year in 1998.
