HIGH POINT, N.C., March 26, 2012 – Several students at High Point University recently volunteered to support public television by participating in UNC-TV’s annual telethon pledge drive at the network’s studio in the Research Triangle Park near Raleigh.
During the telethon, which was part of the network’s FESTIVAL 2012, HPU students answered telephone calls made by viewers to make pledges and donations during a live broadcast in the network’s programming.
“I have volunteered at UNC-TV’s FESTIVAL twice with HPU, and both times were a wonderful experience,” says Alexis Marley, a senior majoring in communication at HPU. “We were able to see what it is like behind the scenes at a successful TV studio, and we enjoyed talking to the contributors who called during our experience.”
UNC-TV relies on viewer contributions to maintain its services, which are available throughout the state, as well as portions of South Carolina and Virginia.
“I appreciate the willingness of our students to spend a Saturday making a difference for UNC-TV,” says Dr. Don Scarborough, vice president for Community Relations at HPU. “Each year, High Point University students provide more than 40,000 hours of community service, and it’s an important part of HPU’s culture.”
