HIGH POINT, N.C., April 2, 2012 – Students in the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication are committed to advancing the reputation of HPU at a national level. Radford Hyde, of the Piedmont Triad, and Chelsea Hyde, of Lunenburg, Mass. – both strategic communication majors at HPU – did that by recently participating in the national assembly of the Public Relations Student Society of America, along with Dr. Linda B. Gretton, assistant professor of communication.
The Public Relations Student Society of America – or PRSSA – is the largest pre-professional organization in America. At the national assembly, Radford and Chelsea participated in leadership training, ethics discussions and attended presentations from communication professionals. Assembly participants collaborated to make influential, long-term decisions for the national organization. Students also engaged in professional networking.
“High Point University’s involvement with PRSSA is a direct application of our communication education and is an excellent example of HPU’s focus on experiential learning in action in our School of Communication,” says Radford Hyde, HPU’s national liaison for PRSSA. “We are very fortunate that HPU is an institution that communicates well. We’re grateful to HPU and proud of our school of communication. When we interact with other institutions, we realize the true meaning of HPU’s character development and values-based learning.”
Students engaged a variety of speakers on communication topics. Mary Tribble, chief of events for the Democratic National Convention planning committee spoke about using corporate events to connect an organization to its publics.
“This weekend at the national assembly, PRSSA provided students with outstanding networking resources and opportunities to build professional relationships in the field of strategic communication,” says Chelsea Hyde, HPU’s secretary for PRSSA. “The pre-professional organization enables us to foster connections and promote our school of communication on a national platform.”
“Radford and Chelsea represented HPU very well,” says Gretton. “They interacted with delegates from all over the United States and gained invaluable information that will help to make HPU’s PRSSA program even stronger going forward. I was pleased to be a small part of their extraordinary experience.”
