Dean of Chapel Delivers Last Sermon before Retirement

HIGH POINT, N.C., April 30, 2012 – After 23 years of service, Dr. Hal Warlick, dean of chapel at High Point University, delivered his final sermon to students on April 25 in the Charles E. Hayworth Senior Memorial Chapel.

During the service, HPU president Nido Qubein presented Warlick with the status and award of Dean Emeritus of the Charles E. Hayworth Senior Memorial Chapel.

The service also honored all seniors who will be graduating on May 5.

In Warlick’s sermon, he discussed his most dedicated students to attend chapel services and his most memorable sermon illustrations. He also discussed the most memorable Board of Stewards the chapel has ever had. The Board of Stewards is a group of students who volunteer to organize and manage chapel events throughout the year. He said that the Board of Stewards that “stood the tallest” was the current 2011-2012 board.

“They were powerful because they practiced humility, and they did good things quietly and with integrity. Their seniors walked their entire four years beside the student body in times of death and beside the poor and needy in the High Point community in ways that were truly inspiring… “

Lindsey Queener, a senior and a member of the Board of Stewards, said Warlick had impacted her life greatly during her four years at the university.

“Dr. Warlick has been a special friend and mentor to me and so many students here,” she says. “He makes everyone feel at home in the HPU Chapel, and our community is so vibrant because of his investment in students’ lives.”

He ended his sermon by noting the importance of standing by one another through troublesome times.

“There’s no greater gift than one which comes to you through someone else’s ?long walk’ of self-giving, self-denial and sacrifice… ” said Warlick. “My last message as dean of the chapel here is now over. But the long walk of my love for you will never end. God bless you all.” Pam Haynes
