HIGH POINT, N.C., April 3, 2012 – High Point University will present one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies of all time – “Twelfth Night” – the story that portrays a bit of mistaken identity as the main characters must prevail in order to win “true love.” The production, which will be held in the Pauline Theatre of the Hayworth Fine Arts Center, runs April 14 through April 22. It is open to the public, and tickets are available to purchase.
“Twelfth Night” is a celebration of romantic love, in all of its splendor and follies. While the original Shakespeare play was written in the 17th century, the message of the play can be told in many different time periods.
“We are setting the play in the 1920s – the “Jazz Age” – when life was one big party,” says Michael Huie, adjunct professor at HPU. ” ‘Twelfth Night’ is about love in its many forms. There are characters who pine away for others; there are characters who fall immediately and deeply in love; and still others who harbor a secret love that is never requited. The spirit of the Jazz Age meshes perfectly with the rollicking spirit of Shakespeare’s comedy, where true, perfect love is waiting around the corner, and everyone – as the song suggests – says, ‘I love you.’
The production will be directed by Michael Huie and stars seniors Courtney Bedgood, Daniel Harr, Alex Mathis, Dan Moldovan and Maggie Jo Saylor; juniors Marisa Brown and Turner Morehead; sophomores Chaz Duffy, Courtney Feiman, Jared Goldenberg, DeAnna Hughes and David Mikulay; and freshmen Justin Beard and Nick Ogle. Stage managers are Becca Donald, Lauren Henkel and Courtney Ziegler.
“We feel Shakespeare is for any age,” adds Huie. “Sure, the language has changed in the last 400 years, but people haven’t so much.”
Show times for the play are at 7:30 p.m. on April 14 and April 17-20, and at 2 p.m. on April 15 and April 22. On April 21, the show will begin at 6 p.m., and sandwiches will be provided for the audience to enjoy during the performance.
