HIGH POINT, N.C., April 30, 2012 – The Alpha Chi Omega Sorority at High Point University recently took part in a nationwide campaign – the Clothesline Project – a project that helps raise awareness about domestic violence.
As part of the project, students decorated T-shirts to be hung on a clothesline to help spread the word about the fact that domestic violence truly does occur everywhere. Each decorated T-shirt symbolized either someone who was a victim of domestic violence or someone who knew a victim of domestic violence.
“I was grateful to see the numerous students who came out to decorate shirts and promote awareness,” says Rachel Dyke, member of Alpha Chi Omega who helped plan the event. “No matter your gender, race, religion or socioeconomic status, it just goes to show you that domestic violence impacts people everywhere.”
Dyke notes that considering this was the first time the sorority had participated in the project, her chapter found the event to be moving.
“It is important to participate in projects like the Clothesline Project because raising awareness is one of the first steps to eradicating domestic violence,” Dyke says. “Domestic violence is literally everywhere and it takes many forms … emotional, sexual and even financial. Projects like this and others are crucial for helping the HPU campus to understand all that domestic violence encompasses in order for us to take steps as a community to eliminate it.”
The Clothesline Project, which was founded in 1990, is a nationwide campaign that aims educate the public and eliminate domestic violence against women.
