HIGH POINT, N.C., May 11, 2012 – High Point University’s chapter of To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA) recently hosted the nonprofit organization’s founder, Jamie Tworkowski, as part of a year-end event to help spread the group’s message of promoting hope and finding help for people struggling with issues related to mental health, such as depression, addiction, suicide and self-injury.
“Our event with Jamie Tworkowski was a huge success,” says Jordan Elmore, student president of TWLOHA. “We had a great turnout; we raised a lot of money and were able to spread the message of the organization event further across our campus.”
The group, which started on campus in September 2011 and was honored with the Outstanding Student Organization award, has remained dedicated in its programming throughout the year, which included weekly meetings that involved presentations on topics related to mental health, as well as informal discussions about the group’s mission. The group also hosted other events, such as talks, concerts and more to help spread awareness.
“I am very proud of what the TWLOHA officers have accomplished this year,” says Dr. Chris Lootens, the group’s faculty adviser and an assistant professor of psychology. “They have done an excellent job recruiting members, setting up meetings, and organizing events that are both fun and consistent with the mission of this organization. The recent visit with Jamie was very successful, and it was a wonderful way to end the year. I look forward to even bigger and better events with these students next year.”
The group is especially beneficial to HPU students, because it gives them a place to let them know they aren’t alone in their struggles; it gives students a resource for situations in which they may feel alone and without help.
“I hope our chapter here at HPU continues to grow and serve as a resource for students so they know that they are not alone in their battles and that there are people and friends around them who are there for them,” Elmore says.
