HIGH POINT, N.C., May 7, 2012 -Robin Fain, a senior at High Point University majoring in psychology, recently presented results from a collaborative research project at the Annual Meeting of the North Carolina Cognition Group. The event was held on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Fain’s presentation, titled “Eye Remember: Continuing to Improve Episodic Memory,” examined the benefits of rapid eye movements which has been shown to improve memory for items recently studied.
Fain began the study as part an advanced research methods class and worked closely with Dr. Kimberly Wear, cognitive psychologist and associate professor of psychology at HPU.
Fain’s research was based on the idea that eye movements increase communication between the two brain hemispheres. This series of studies investigated the rate of the back-and-forth eye movements, as well as how long the effect would last. The end result of her study found that a fast rate of eye movements (250 ms more than 500 ms) improved ability to distinguish between items actually studied and items that were similar in meaning but not actually studied.
