HIGH POINT, N.C., June 15, 2012 – Dr. Kirstin Squint, assistant professor of English at High Point University, recently presented a research paper at the annual meeting of the American Literature Association in San Francisco. Her featured research, titled “Funeral Rites, Ancestor Spirits, and Female Healers in LeAnne Howe’s Novels,” was part of the “Southern Necrologies” panel.
Squint’s paper, which is part of a chapter from her current book project, “Choctalking Reality: LeAnne Howe’s Native, Interstate, and Global South,” detailed female healer figures in Choctaw writer LeAnne Howe’s novels, “Shell Shaker” and “Miko Kings: An Indian Baseball Story.”
“I have published articles and given numerous presentations on Native American literature – both at regional and national professional conferences. Since my area of specialization is multi-ethnic United States literature, this supports my work in the classroom,” Squint says. “My fall 2012 sophomore level English course will read Howe’s ‘Shell Shaker’ as we explore the theme, ‘American Indians and Authenticity.'”
