Rising Junior Gets Portfolio Management, Investment Experience with Summer Internship

HIGH POINT, N.C., June 26, 2012 – Matthew Goff, a rising junior at High Point University, is investing in his future by interning at Scott & Stringfellow, a wholly-owned nonbank subsidiary of BB&T Corporation, this summer. As a summer analyst, Goff – who is majoring in accounting with a minor in finance – is getting the chance to see how a professional investment firm works.

Scott & Stringfellow operates as a full-service regional brokerage and investment banking firm serving individual, institutional, corporate and municipal clients. Goff is working under the direction of Robert Rose, managing director and a Scott & Stringfellow top 10 financial advisor. Goff assists in portfolio management, research and other day-to-day tasks.

“This internship is allowing me to put into practice my passion for the public markets in a results-driven environment,” says Goff. “It will also allow me to get a good feel for the BB&T Capital Markets and Scott & Stringfellow culture. Having invited Kelly King, chief executive officer of BB&T, to speak to the Phillips School of Business last year, it’s a great opportunity to experience his firm firsthand.”

Goff is hoping that the internship will also help position him on the right track to become the portfolio manager that he aspires to be. As president of the Floyd T. Craven Investment Club at HPU, Goff is already gaining valuable insight into the field of investing.

“Along with my out-of-class work, my experience with the Floyd T. Craven Investment Club and the outstanding preparation provided by my accounting and finance professors has prepared me well to think critically and make quick analytical decisions in a fast-paced work environment,” said Goff. “Among many things, this internship will introduce me to managing behavioral finance aspects of clients in a volatile market.”

Goff plans to take the CFA Level I Exam after graduation.
