HIGH POINT, N.C., June 13, 2012 – Joel Wilson, a rising junior at High Point University, is taking a swing at his career by getting the chance to intern with the 2012 PGA Championship at The Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, S.C.

Wilson, who is majoring in strategic communication with a minor in sports management, is working as an operations assistant for the PGA Championship. He is preparing for one of the four largest annual golf events in the world by assisting in behind the scene logistics including the construction of the tournament, tournament operations, working with volunteers, and eventually deconstruction of the final major championship of the year.

“This is an incredible opportunity for me to advance my career for several reasons,” says Wilson. “I have the opportunity to work with some of the top professionals in the golf industry and I will be able to learn a great deal from them.”

Wilson says his coursework at HPU has helped him make a seamless transition to the professional field. Communication and sport management classes that he has taken at HPU have prepared him for a career in his dream field.

“I aspire to be a professional in the world of sports,” says Wilson. “These classes have taught me how to work well with fellow employees, understanding my strengths and weaknesses along with the necessary knowledge and skill set in order to be successful in sports business and communication.”
