HIGH POINT, N.C., June 18, 2012 – Sarah Roof, a rising senior at High Point University, is getting a taste of behind-the-scenes action at the decorated Boston news channel, WCVB-TV Channel 5, as an assignment desk intern.
Roof, who is majoring in communication, does a variety of tasks on the job at the news station such as identifying breaking news stories in and around Boston. She also interacts with the public and monitors the AP wire and social media to further search for the latest news.
The station is in a top 10 market and recently won 12 Emmy awards and 10 regional AP awards, among others. Roof says she is gaining great experience with a top tier business in a field she plans to work in one day – and she credits her time in her communication classes at HPU for being fully prepared for the internship experience.
“Many of my day-to-day tasks at my internship coincide with the things I’ve learned at HPU,” says Roof. “My classes with Dr. Yan Yang have been exceptionally helpful … she always tried to instill in us that deadlines are the most important factor in a newsroom, and I’m now seeing that firsthand. I’ve also learned in class that accuracy is more important than being first – and this has been translated in the newsroom, too.”
Roof says she is benefiting from the internship tremendously, as she’s able to work side-by-side with editors, producers and news executives each day.
“Being able to see all sides of the newsroom is important,” she says. “Many viewers at home may not realize it, but there are so many things that go into producing just one hour of a newscast. I am now able to understand a broadcast and see all the many facets that must be in place to have a successful show.”
