HIGH POINT, N.C., August 13, 2012 – Nicole Chrysson, who graduated in May from HPU with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, presented her research at the American Psychological Association Conference, in Orlando, Fla., held Aug. 2-5.
Her research is titled, “Impact of Parental Control on Risk Taking and Autonomy in Undergraduate Students.” After working on the research in her research methods class, taught by Dr. Jana Spain, professor of psychology, and Dr. Kristen Li-Barber, assistant professor of psychology, Li-Barber and Chrysson decided to submit the abstract to the APA and it was accepted.
“This study focused primarily on the interaction between parental control and risk-taking levels in emerging adults,” said Chrysson. “The inspiration for this study came from my curiosity of how risk-taking behaviors in college can be influenced by parental control, and if parents really can have an impact even after their children leave for college.”
Chrysson was Li-Barber’s advisee and research assistant. During senior year at HPU, Chrysson worked with Li-Barber to analyze data and complete the poster for APA.
“Nicole was one of our strongest psychology students. I think that she is a great example of the type of students we have in our department – academically strong, motivated, intellectually curious and ambitious,” said Li-Barber.
“Without HPU, Dr. Li-Barber and Dr. Spain, this study would not have happened,” said Chrysson.
