HIGH POINT, N.C., Aug. 18, 2012 – High Point University welcomed a host of new freshmen to its campus today for the annual Move-In Day event.
HPU has prepared its campus with a variety of new features that enhance its overall educational experience. The year starts out on a high note with the new LEED-certified School of Education, 24 new faculty members, the first doctoral degree program in the school’s history, additional experiential learning offerings and a new residence hall.
Academic growth has been the focus at HPU. The new 31,000-square-foot School of Education, which houses the education and psychology departments in technologically advanced classrooms, computer labs and offices, will open on the first day of class, Aug. 21. The school features its own resource center, library and study lounge, and is a prime example for modern day energy conservation with decreased water and energy usage throughout the building.
Along with the School of Education, HPU introduced its first doctoral degree program in educational leadership. The doctoral program is a practitioner-based, professional experience that focuses on creating systems that are grounded in research, are culturally responsive, and ultimately improve student learning.
Additionally, four new minors were introduced to students – Chinese, Dance, Health Education and Italian Studies – giving students even broader academic options in the classroom.
Due to the growth in academic programs, more residence space was needed to house additional students enrolling in these programs. HPU’s Centennial Square, the seventh residential community added to campus since 2005, opened and houses 349 students in 11 townhome buildings. The townhome community features a learning commons and a fitness center.
