HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 14, 2012 – Emmy award-winning journalist Steve Sapienza is bringing his Pulitzer Center reporting project, “Peru’s Gold Rush: Wealth and Woes,” to High Point University. The presentation will be held at 7 p.m. on Sept. 25 in Phillips Hall. The event is open to the public.Through his collection of reporting for the Pulitzer Center and PBS NewsHour, Sapienza will focus on how the global consumption of goods impacts precious resources and local people in Peru and Thailand. He will also comment on labor violations and human trafficking in the Thai shrimp industry and the rising sea-level crisis in Bangladesh. Sapienza is a producer of news and documentary stories for television and the online audiences. He is a veteran video journalist with more than 20 years of production experience. Most of his career has been dedicated to covering underreported stories from around the world.
The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, an innovative, award-winning nonprofit journalism organization based in Washington, D.C., is dedicated to supporting independent international journalism. Its Campus Consortium is a growing network of more than a dozen universities and colleges aimed at raising awareness of systemic international concerns often underreported in U.S. media.
HPU became part of the consortium in the spring of 2012, and recent graduate Andrew Faust was selected by the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting to receive a stipend to travel to the Middle East and report on a critical international issue in May. Faust traveled to the United Arab Emirates and investigated the growth of the fast food industry in the UAE.
