HIGH POINT, N.C., Feb. 25, 2013 – The Sechrest Art Gallery at High Point University will soon feature a variety of artwork by students from across the Southeast by hosting the Big South Undergraduate Research Symposium Exhibit. The exhibit will be held March 11 through April 6. The exhibit will also host a reception at 7 p.m. on April 5.

The intercollegiate juried exhibit will feature 56 pieces in various media, including paintings, drawings, photography, sculptures and mixed media works, both 2-D and 3-D.

“This is only the second year an art exhibition has ever been included in the BigSURS conference, so we are excited to be hosting what we hope will be a tradition,” says Benita VanWinkle, instructor of art at HPU.

HPU student Laura Schramm, a senior majoring in nonprofit leadership and management with a minor in graphic design, is one of the many students displaying her work in the show. She will hang five pieces in the exhibit.

“I have had some of my work displayed before, but this is the first gallery/juried exhibition I am participating in,” says Schramm, who also designed the program cover, T-shirt design and name tags for Big SURS. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to display my work because I believe that photography, graphic design and art have the ability to change the world. It’s exciting for my work to be judged so I can receive feedback and learn how others view my work.”

Schramm, whose pieces are titled “Vision,” “Trial and Error,” “Summer Rain,” “Broken,” as well as a collage piece, called “Fragments,” says she feels privileged to have the opportunity to display her work along with so many other talented artists. “I can’t wait to see the pieces they have in the show,” she adds.

Students displaying art in the exhibit are in the running for awards; four awards will be selected by esteemed juror Todd Drake, painter and photographer who is also an artist-in-residence at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “Best in Show” will receive a grand prize of $150, and three juror’s award winners will receive $75 each.

The exhibit is part of the annual Big South Undergraduate Research Symposium, which High Point University will host on its campus April 5-6. BigSURS provides undergraduate scholars in all fields a forum to share the results of their work through posters, presentations, performances, and works of art.

Schools participating include: High Point University; Appalachian State University; Campbell University; Coastal Carolina University; Davidson College; Guilford College; Liberty University; Longwood University; Presbyterian College; Radford University; Salem College; UNC-Asheville; UNC-Chapel Hill; UNC-Greensboro; Virginia Military Institute; and Winthrop University.
