HIGH POINT, N.C., Feb. 19, 2013 – Students in High Point University’s Civitan Club are partnering with Open Door Ministries to host a Homeless Awareness Campout on March 22. The campout is free and open to the public, and community members can sign up to participate and spread awareness about homelessness in the city of High Point.
Students of the Civitan Club have held numerous events, from cooking meals at Open Door Ministries to contributing to the Angel Tree program at the Salvation Army of High Point, in order to better their community. This event will focus specifically on homelessness and give participants a glimpse of what it’s like to not have a roof over their heads for one night.
The event will be held in the former J.C. Penney parking lot at Oak Hollow Mall where HPU students, faculty and staff will sleep in tents for the night. Members of the community who would like to participate should RSVP through Open Door Ministries by emailing Leslie Graham at firstname.lastname@example.org. The deadline to RSVP is March 15.
“The purpose of the event is to raise awareness about the difficulties faced by more than 1,000 people experiencing homelessness on any given night in Guilford County,” says Dr. Daniel Hall, assistant professor of economics and faculty adviser to the Civitan Club. “We will also be raising funds for community partners who are currently providing shelter and assistance to the homeless.”
HPU students have held homeless awareness campouts before, but Brenda Coates, staff adviser to the Civitan Club, says the students are excited to partner with Open Door Ministries and the entire community for this event. West End Ministries and Partners Ending Homelessness are also serving as community partners for the event.
Several fundraisers will lead up to the event on March 22, with all proceeds going toward Open Door Ministries to battle homelessness:
• Feb. 19, Liberty Steakhouse Dine Out for the Cause event – Liberty Steakhouse will donate 10 percent of all sales from 5 to 10 p.m. to the Civitan Club.
• March 13, Chili’s Dine Out for the Cause event – Chili’s will donate 10 percent of sales from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. for customers who mention the HPU Civitan Club that day.
