Professor Awarded Top Faculty Paper

HIGH POINT, N.C., June 18, 2014 – Dr. Jim Trammell, assistant professor of electronic media at High Point University, recently received the 2014 Top Faculty Paper Award from the Religion and Media Interest Group of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Trammell’s paper titled, “Want to Feel the Love of Christ? There’s an App for That: Understanding Tablet Media as the New Electronic Church,” analyzes religious apps, specifically the “Jesus Calling” app. The paper addresses how tablet media accommodate the ‘all-about-you,’ self-focused themes that dominate Christian media.

These are all topics Trammell also examines in his First Year Seminar course at HPU, “Mass Media and American Christianity.”

“This is one of those moments when you feel validated about the work you do,” says Trammell. “It says other scholars of religion and media believe your work is valuable and important.”

The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) is a nonprofit, educational association designed to promote the highest possible standards for journalism and mass communication in education.
