Cardiovascular Health Expert to Speak at HPU

HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 15, 2014 – The School of Health Sciences at High Point University will welcome Dr. Jason D. Allen for its Distinguished Lecture Series at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 24.The event will be held in the Francis Auditorium of Phillips Hall on the HPU campus. It is open to the public; no tickets are required.

Cardiovascular disease is the number one health concern in the United States. Allen will share his research on cardiovascular health, especially focusing on his study of blood flow, the functioning of the cells lining the blood vessels and the availability of nitric oxide in the body during exercise.

“Dr. Allen has established himself as a leading researcher who bridges the gap between basic science and medicine through examining the mechanisms behind the benefits of exercise,” says Dr. James Smoliga, associate professor of physiology and associate director of the Human Biomechanics and Physiology Lab at HPU. “His novel research has resulted in numerous direct clinical applications to optimize cardiovascular health.”

Allen is a professor and director of clinical exercise science and rehabilitation at the Institute of Sport Exercise and Active Living in the College of Sport and Exercise Science at Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia. Previously, he spent 12 years at Duke University, 10 of those years as director of the Frederick R. Cobb Non-Invasive Vascular Research Laboratory. He has received several federal and industry-sponsored research grants, and he is a Registered Vascular Specialist and Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine.
