Applying for college and scholarships can be a stressful time in a high school student’s life, but incoming High Point University freshman Tory Crossen didn’t let that stop her from taking on a new project and helping others.
While applying for scholarships, Crossen came across the “Teens for Jeans” campaign, which collects jeans for homeless teenagers.
“I started to put myself in their shoes and tried to imagine what it would be like to be homeless and have nothing to wear,” says Crossen. “I wanted to spread awareness and try to collect as many pairs of jeans for teenagers in need. As it turned out, running a campaign and serving others gave me great experience which I hope to continue in college.”
Crossen put up signs in her school and started collecting. She gathered about 800 pairs of jeans in just two weeks. Now, she hopes to continue serving others while attending HPU.
“I chose High Point University, because the moment I walked on campus I knew I had found the right school,” says Crossen. “Everyone was so caring and welcoming that I could tell I wasn’t going to be just a number at this school, but a person that the professors will actually care about.”
Crossen will major in Elementary Education at HPU on her way to becoming a teacher.
