HPU Welcomes Dance Instructor Lindsey Howie

HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 26, 2014 – Lindsey Howie recently joined the faculty at High Point University as an instructor of dance.

In her new position at HPU, Howie will teach dance technique classes covering both the physical aspects of various dances as well as their historical and societal contexts. She also will serve as choreographer for a musical and will help produce the spring dance concert.

Howie, a native of Mechanicsville, Virginia, started dancing at age 3. Throughout her career as a choreographer and teacher, she has participated in many dance festivals and performances throughout the state and region. She has studied with, performed for and trained under world renowned artists, such as Eddy Ocampo, Nick Pupillo, Joel Hall and Kirby Reed. As a member of the Van Dyke Dance Group of Greensboro, she maintains a spot on the “big stage,” where she says she finds comfort and inspiration.

“The thing I love most about my job is that I get to share my passion of dance – not only the physical movement, but the historical, emotional and theoretical aspects of dance,” Howie says. “I get to motivate and hopefully inspire my students to be and want something more. I care deeply about the students that walk into my dance studio and want them to succeed not only as artists, but as citizens.”

Howie is a familiar face at HPU. She served as an adjunct instructor last year, and during that time she encouraged students in more than just dance. She helped her classes organize a canned food drive in the fall and a diaper collection in the spring. Outside of work, she volunteers at the Piedmont Diaper Bank in Winston-Salem.

Howie has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance performance with a concentration in jazz dance from East Carolina University and a Master of Fine Arts in dance with a concentration in choreography from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
