HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 10, 2014 – Simeon Simeonides, a sophomore Physics major at High Point University, joined the nation’s top scholars and industry leaders to share his research at Semiconductor Research Corporation’s TECHCON conference. Held Sept. 7-9 in Austin, Texas, the conference showcased the forefront of semiconductor research by undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. students.
Simeonides was selected out of 360 undergraduates to present his research at the conference. This includes students from premier research universities, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, The University of California, Berkeley and Georgia Institute of Technology.
Research selected for presentation at TECHCON represents the best research in SRC’s portfolio across all of the organization’s research programs. To be invited, Simeonides submitted an abstract of a project he completed this summer at the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering. There, he was part of a team developing personal heart monitors that help determine heart health and possibly predict heart attacks.
SRC Education Alliance, along with Intel Foundation, provided a scholarship for him to conduct his research and attend the conference, which brings students from a variety of science and engineering majors together with scholars and leaders in the industry to explore cutting-edge silicon-based research and network with other students and professionals.
Simeonides’ paper, titled “ECG Sensor for Personalized Prediction of Heart Attack Risk,” discusses a mathematical model that simulates the way electrical signals move through organs like the heart. The goal is to use the model to determine if a heart is healthy or unstable. It also discusses the design of an ECG (electrocardiogram) that can be integrated into clothing and constantly monitor heart health.
“TECHCON was a great experience,” Simeonides says. “As a culmination of my summer research, it provided an opportunity to network with industry representatives as well as interact with fellow students with interests similar to mine.”
In addition to Simeonides’ participation at TECHCON, Dr. Nido Qubein, president of HPU, delivered an opening keynote address on communicating and connecting in a technical environment to industry leaders and attendees from more than 100 universities.
