Sportscaster Bob Rathbun to Visit HPU

HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 19, 2014 – High Point University will welcome Emmy award-winning sports announcer, author and motivational speaker Bob Rathbun for a presentation at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 30 in the Wilson Commerce Ballroom on campus. The event is free and open to the public; no tickets are required.

Author of the book “The Fast Forward Winner,” Rathbun is the voice of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks, the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream, as well as the network’s long-standing college football, basketball and baseball authority. He has been named Sportscaster of the Year eight times in two different states, has earned nine NATAS Southeast Regional Emmy Awards for his broadcasting excellence, and has been selected for induction into three different Halls of Fame.

During his presentation titled “Fast Forward Winner,” Rathbun will discuss how to take an idea, put it into action and achieve remarkable results. He will walk attendees through six concepts – including using imagination, the art of preparation and trusting intuition – that empower people to realize their dreams by visualizing them and then taking the steps necessary to achieve them.

Also in conjunction with his visit, Rathbun will speak to students in multiple HPU classes about sports journalism, news reporting and successful management.

Since 1987, Rathbun has broadcast college football in the SEC, ACC and Big East for FOX Sports South and Raycom. One of the NBA’s most recognizable and decorated play-by-play announcers, his basketball work has earned him opportunities to call games for TNT, NBA-TV, CBS, ABC, ESPN, FOX Sports Net and the ACC Television Network. His baseball resume includes 10 years as FSN South’s voice of the Atlanta Braves, three seasons in Detroit with the Tigers on WJR Radio, and part-time work for the Baltimore Orioles on Home Team sports.

Rathbun graduated with a bachelor’s degree in speech from Catawba College in 1976.
