Theatre to Perform ‘On the Verge’

HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 29, 2014 – High Point University’s Department of Theatre will take on Eric Overmyer’s “On the Verge; or, The Geography of Yearning,” in an upcoming performance. The production will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 9-11, and Oct. 13-15 in the Empty Space Theatre.

“‘On the Verge’ is a wildly theatrical tale about three intrepid Victorian-era women who, in 1888, set out on an adventure to explore ‘Terra Incognita,’ encountering along the way friendly cannibals, Himalayan yetis, and a hostile bridge troll as they thwack their machetes through the wilderness, eventually entering a wormhole through time and landing in 1955 Las Vegas,’” says Ed Simpson, chair of the HPU Department of Theatre and director of the play.

“On the Verge” has been called “a thoroughly serendipitous journey” and “a frolicsome jaunt through a continuum of space, time, history, geography, feminism, and fashion” by The New York Times.

The production stars senior Ashton Hunt as “Mary Baltimore,” junior Macauley Quirk as “Fanny Cranberry,” freshman Ceili Lang as “Alexandra Caffuffle,” and freshman Jared Lindsay in nine different roles. Junior Sarah Steele is the stage manager for the show.

“It is, perhaps, unlike any theatrical production our audiences have ever seen – and that’s part of the reason we thought it was a great way to start our season,” Simpson adds.

Tickets are $10 for general admission, $7 for senior citizens, $5 for non-HPU students and $3 for children 12 and under. HPU students receive one complimentary ticket by showing their valid HPU Passport Card. Those interested in purchasing tickets may contact the HPU Box Office at Hayworth Fine Arts Center at 336-841-4673.
