HIGH POINT, N.C., Oct. 3, 2014 – An explosion of pink slime captivated 60 children from the High Point Boys and Girls Club on the campus of High Point University.
The slime – simulated lava – streamed down the sides of the volcanic experiment while the children oohed and aahed. Other experiments, led by HPU’s Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and Alpha Chi Omega sorority, spanned the sciences from particle simulation to magnetic fields.
Each experiment was bright and colorful, sometimes messy, and always educational.
“I just learned a lot of new things I’ve never known before while having fun,” said Elisia Stewart, one of the children who attended the event. “I learned all about how a lava lamp is made with the water, the oil and the food coloring.”
That was the point of hosting a Science Fair on campus, according to Hannah Shaheen, Alpha Chi Omega member.

“We decided to co-host this event to reach out to our community and do something beneficial for local children,” said junior Hannah Shaheen, a member of Alpha Chi Omega. “We wanted to do things even beyond our regular philanthropy causes because we like to benefit the community as well.”
Tonya Evans, program director for the High Point Boys and Girls Club, said her group visits campus several times a year for events like the science fair.
“We have a lot of HPU students who volunteer with us, and one of them wanted to hold this event for us,” said Evans. “They invite us to many things like this throughout the year – basketball games, college tours and other things. It’s great for our children because they can see what to expect and what to learn in college and what they have to look forward to.”
