HIGH POINT, N.C., Jan. 21, 2015 – High Point University welcomes Dr. Steven Dischiavi as assistant professor in the Department of Physical Therapy. Dischiavi brings 20 years of experience in sports medicine to his new position, including 10 years with a professional sports team.
In addition to teaching courses in physical therapy and working in the Human Biomechanics and Physiology Laboratory, Dischiavi also works with HPU student-athletes in the athletic training room. This dual role enhances HPU’s research of athletic performance as well as the world-class rehabilitation and training provided to student-athletes.
“This is a position that bridges the gap between clinical athletic training services, like the day-to-day work we do with our student-athletes, and the physical therapy research conducted in the biomechanics lab,” Dischiavi says. “This way, students have access to a professional who is licensed in both physical therapy and athletic training to assist them with rehab. I’ll also be charged with creating a collaborative learning environment with the certified athletic trainers on staff by putting the best of our research into practice for the successful treatment of our injured student athletes.”
Dischiavi served as team physical therapist and assistant certified athletic trainer for the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League from 2004 to 2014. He also has his own company, Finish First Physical Therapy & Athletic Conditioning, through which he provides continuing education to other professionals and acts as a consultant for athletes and therapists.
Dischiavi attended Slippery Rock University, where he majored in athletic training. He earned a Master of Physical Therapy from SUNY Upstate Medical University and a Doctor of Physical Therapy from A.T. Still University.
