HIGH POINT, N.C., Jan. 13, 2015 – High Point University in partnership with the Institutes of Mexicans Abroad and the office of the Consulate General of Mexico awarded scholarships to two HPU students of Mexican heritage.
Freshman Isabella Alcazar and sophomore Karla Villarreal received scholarships totaling $7,500.
“I am very happy to be a recipient of this scholarship. I am very proud of my Hispanic roots and grateful for the financial support Mexico is giving me,” says Karla Villarreal. “I would like to thank the Mexican Consulate for this award because with it, I am one step closer to achieving my goal of becoming a college graduate. ¡Gracias!”
The Institutes of Mexicans Abroad program was created to help raise the education levels of Mexican and Mexican-origin populations living in the United States. The Government of Mexico presents $10 million to nonprofit social organizations and educational institutions that support the higher educations of Mexican immigrants interested in starting, continuing or completing their studies.
“We are excited about the prospect of recruiting more students from Mexico thanks to this scholarship program,” says Marjorie Church, director of international student services and ESL. “We are honored to be selected by the Institutes of Mexicans Abroad program as of one of their funded institutions.”
