HIGH POINT, N.C., Jan. 23, 2015 – Firefighters – they’re the everyday superheroes in our community. They don’t wear capes or seek recognition for their service, but they help people during difficult and dangerous times.

High Point University students wanted to give back to the men and women who serve in these roles as a way to say thank you. Theatre majors in a costume design class decided to sew a symbol of the heroism that firefighters exhibit each day.

The students created and donated 29 child-sized superhero capes to High Point Fire Department. The fire department will keep the capes in their trucks and offer them to children during a tragic moment as a way to lift a child’s spirit.

The capes feature some familiar emblems of superheroes like Spiderman, Batman and others. They are also designed provide to warmth and comfort to children in difficult times.

“I think it’s wonderful do something for your neighbors, which brings about a sense of community,” said HPU senior and theatre major Alexander Oliver. “It was very special for us to make these capes. It’s scary for a child when something traumatic happens, like a car accident or a fire. This lets them know someone is there for them. Someone cares.”

Fire Chief Tommy Reid says the HPFD is grateful to have the capes to give to children when they’re working in the field.

“The children we see are sometimes in one of the worst moments of their lives,” Reid said. “The cape is great concept HPU students came up with to offer comfort and joy. It’s a small token that goes a long way.”
