HIGH POINT, N.C., March 25, 2015 – High Point University celebrated the rich and diverse community of women at the city’s first International Women’s Day Celebration at the YWCA High Point on March 20. HPU students in the “Women, Gender and Culture” service learning class organized the event in cooperation with the YWCA, the Latino Family Center and City of High Point Human Relations Department.

International Women’s Day is a worldwide celebration acknowledging the contributions of women to society and the importance of gender equality. The event included food, music and performances representing women from many countries, including Mexico, Burma, Iraq and Sudan. Traditional Hispanic folk dances were presented by members of High Point’s Latino Family Center.

“We are thrilled with the turnout of attendees at the celebration,” said Jenn Brandt, director of women’s and gender studies. “There are a number of local organizations committed to helping the women of High Point, and this event allowed us to celebrate the work they are doing. Students got a chance to learn more about these organizations and the city of High Point, and all of the attendees had the opportunity to make new friends and deepen the sense of community shared here in the city.”

“The food, the dancing, all of the people – it’s hard to pick a favorite portion of the evening,” said HPU student Emalie Ashe. “I’m glad to be a part of a program that helps to build bridges between High Point University and the greater High Point community. This course has helped me to see that High Point is truly an international city.”
