HIGH POINT, N.C., April 9, 2015 – High Point University’s Department of Biology recently hired Dr. Kristen Bowey as laboratory manager and scientific technician.
Bowey will operate and maintain the laboratory instrumentation within her department, train undergraduate students in their use and assist with techniques used for mammalian cell culture. Other responsibilities include coordinating upper-level biology laboratories and consulting with faculty on applied research and teaching projects.
With expertise in the field of biomedicine, Bowey recently published a paper in the journal Colloids and Surfaces B: Biointerfaces based on research she and a colleague conducted at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. This research helped to develop a simple technique that allows for tiny particles to enter cells and more easily diagnose and deduce various states of disease. Bowey looks forward to bringing this expertise and knowledge to her new position in the biology department.
“I am thrilled to begin this position at HPU,” says Bowey. “I look forward to assisting students with the development of advanced and highly practical laboratory techniques that will be useful whether they plan to pursue graduate school or work in an industrial laboratory setting.”
Bowey graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada with a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science, both in chemical engineering. She also has a doctorate in biomedical engineering from McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
