HIGH POINT, N.C., April 20, 2015 – As part of High Point University’s Disability Awareness Week, the Office of Student Life hosted an Adapted Field Day in the Slane Gym on April 16 for more than 100 students with disabilities from the community.

“Seeing the students’ faces light up because of the fun they were having was such a special moment for me,” says HPU student Amanda Donovan. “As a special education major at HPU, this is my first time being able to work with students with disabilities after being actively involved in working with them in high school. I am grateful to be at a university that brings our community to campus for events like this.”

Students from T.W. Andrews High School, Wheatmore High School, Southwest Middle School, Exceptional Family Support Day Program, Lindley College and Companions on a Journey Daycare enjoyed an afternoon filled with fun and games. Everyone enjoyed a plethora of activates such as dancing, corn hole, Connect Four and popping bubble. At the event, HPU students offered team building and confidence building activities designed to emphasize what each team could do – not what they couldn’t do.

“The event that HPU put together was wonderful and a great break from the academic classroom,” says Maryann Vinay, teacher at Wheatmore High School. “It was a great opportunity to connect with HPU students and our friends from other schools in the area. We are very grateful to HPU for creating this event for our students.”

“I loved seeing how our students embraced this opportunity to volunteer with some of the students with disabilities in our community,” says Camille Walker resident director for the Office of Student Life. “I look forward to future connections and events between High Point University and these schools.”
