HIGH POINT, N.C., April 10, 2015 – Country music star Lee Brice and High Point University students came together on campus today to complete an environmental service project in the Mariana H. Qubein Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.

Brice, who’s currently on the road for his Campus Consciousness Tour, and the students dedicated the afternoon to installing new plants on campus, cleaning the stream behind Blessing residence hall and cutting back overgrowth.

“Giving back to the community and the campus is a great feeling because the university gives so much to us as students,” says HPU student Melanie Maldonado. “Being able to meet Lee Brice while doing this is a great reward.”

The Campus Consciousness Tour is half music tour and half environmental campaign. CCT is a project of REVERB, an environmental nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and engaging musicians and their fans to take action toward a more sustainable future. REVERB has worked on over 150 major music tours including Maroon 5 and Dave Matthews Band.

“We’re hoping to offset the environmental impact of the tour by supporting clean energy projects and using buses and trucks fueled with locally produced biodiesel,” says Brice through the Campus Consciousness website. “I have two sons and I look at this as investing in their future and that of kids around the world.”

“I think it is a wonderful opportunity that we have a major musician coming to the university to get the students excited about being conscientious of the environment,” says Jon Roethling, curator of the grounds at HPU. “Having Brice and the students here is helping get work done in two hours that might normally take a week. It is a fantastic opportunity to blend service with an exciting opportunity for the students at HPU.”

The HPU students that volunteered were Bonner Leaders as well as Service Learning students enrolled in Environmental Ethics.

Later tonight, Brice, Chase Bryant and Cadillac Three will perform at HPU for the 2015 spring concert.
