HIGH POINT, N.C., April 15, 2015 – Nolan Stout, a senior at High Point University, presented his paper at the Phi Alpha Theta Carolinas Regional Conference at the University of South Carolina Beaufort on April 18. Stout won Outstanding Undergraduate Paper Overall as well as Outstanding Undergraduate Paper.
His paper, titled “At All Costs: Manifest Destiny, Texan Imperialism, Secession and the New Mexico Campaign of 1862,” focuses on the confederate invasion of New Mexico during the Civil War. Along with giving an oral presentation of his paper, Stout had the opportunity to interact and network with other students, professors and scholars at the conference.
“The Civil War has always been something I’m interested in, and I am glad I was able to share my work with others at this conference,” says Stout. “I am thankful for HPU, which has given me access I may not have had at another institution to faculty, staff and resources that allowed me to pursue this topic for my paper.”
Stout, who is double majoring in history and communications with a focus in journalism, hopes to one day be a sports writer for a major publication. On campus, he is involved in the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. He has also previously interned with local media like YES! Weekly, ACCSports.com and the High Point Enterprise.
