HIGH POINT, N.C., May 4, 2015 – High Point University’s Civitan Club has received the honor of “Campus Club Service Project of the Year” for the third consecutive year from Civitan International.
They were awarded for their service project, the Homelessness Awareness Campout and car show. The car show was held during the day to attract the public and raise awareness about homelessness. At the campout, students and members of the community put themselves in the shoes of homeless individuals for a night to spread homelessness awareness and support Open Door Ministries, a local nonprofit organization. They slept in tents and sleeping bags throughout the night in honor of homeless individuals who sleep in similar scenarios every night.
“The Civitan Club is honored to receive this award, and we will continue to raise awareness about the homelessness in Guilford County for nonprofits like Open Door Ministries, because it acquires resources to feed, shelter and find homes for those in need,” says Dr. Daniel Hall, assistant professor of economics and faculty adviser.
The HPU Civitan Club was chartered in 2005 and is sponsored by the local High Point chapter of Civitan International. Since 2012, the HPU Civitan Club has received five Civitan International Awards and two HPU Awards for their service.
“Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Civitan Club, we were able to put on an outstanding event that brought the local community together to unite for the fight against homelessness,” says HPU student Michael Brett who organized the car show. “The project opened my eyes to the struggles that people go through every day. It showed me the extraordinary things we can accomplish as students when we all work together.”
Stephanie Vorleiter, Civitan Club member and HPU senior, recently received the University Award for Service at High Point University’s Honors Day ceremony.
“It has been an honor to have been a part of the HPU Civitan Club,” says Vorleiter. “Being able to serve our community alongside other members has had a huge impact on me. It is not us who have given them something, but rather the people we have served, who have taught us about life, service, love and humility. I am thankful the High Point community and partners have given us an opportunity to serve with them.”
