HIGH POINT, N.C., May 1, 2015 – High Point University’s National Association of Black Journalists recently organized and hosted a trip to the Newseum in Washington, D.C. Thirteen HPU students explored the museum’s six floors of hands-on exhibits and gained insight into the history of American journalism.
Students were touched by the museum’s historical galleries, including an exhibit featuring the stories of 9/11’s first responding journalists. Mayeesa Mitchell, president of NABJ-HPU, says her favorite exhibit was the Newseum’s display of front-page news stories throughout history, because it illustrates how the profession has changed over time.
“As an organization dedicated to journalism, we thought it was important to give HPU students the opportunity to visit the Newseum and learn about the rich history of how news is reported,” Mitchell said.
The group also visited the National Museum of American History, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, Georgetown, Lincoln Memorial, Air and Space Museum and the Capitol.
NABJ-HPU is an academic club dedicated to bringing a diverse array of speakers, events and networking opportunities to communication, English and graphic design majors.
