HIGH POINT, N.C., May 18, 2015 – An article by Dr. Christopher Franks, associate professor of religion and philosophy at High Point University, was recently published in the Oxford Encyclopedia of the Bible and Ethics, a new reference book for scholars and students of religion.
Franks contributed an article on poverty in which he explores the major themes of poverty covered in the Bible and other important scholarship on the topic. The article also examines how contemporary ethical concerns have shaped the ways faith communities understand poverty and confront today’s global issues.
“I am honored to be one of the contributors to this publication,” says Franks. “The project seeks to break down disciplinary boundaries between biblical study and ethical inquiry, and that seems to me so important. The life of faith is a whole fabric, and the questions the faithful ask can only be sized up by keeping the whole fabric in view. Writing an article like this is a challenge, but it was a great exercise.”
Franks is one of more than 100 international authors who contributed articles to the book. The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Bible and Ethics explores the intersection between biblical sources and ethical issues, both historical and modern, through the analysis of a wide range of topics by leading biblical scholars and ethicists. The two-volume encyclopedia provides a comprehensive overview of everything from ethics in books of the Bible to modern movements and hot-button issues, such as capital punishment, bioethics and abortion.
