HIGH POINT, N.C., May 6, 2015 – Thirteen students from High Point University presented their hard work and research along with faculty mentors at the seventh annual Big South Undergraduate Research Symposium, held at Campbell University.
During the symposium, students not only presented their research in oral and poster sessions, but also had the opportunity to network with students from all over the region.
Seven students won awards for their presentations. The winners are:
- Lindsay Anuzis, who presented “The Effect of Hippotherapy on Self-Esteem in Girls Who Have Been Bullied.”
- Christina Burchette
- Rodrigo Catalan-Hurtado, who presented “The Detection of the Transcription Regulator GerE in Geobacillus stearothermophilus.”
- Justin Cummings, who presented “Dr. Samuel Burford: An Exploration into Faculty-Student Relationships at William Penn High School.”
- Alex Mills, who presented “Hot Theories: Revealing the Popularity of Intersectional Ideologies in ‘Lost.’”
- Mary Pruitt and Taylor Daniel, who presented “Apiary Microcosm: Bees through the Lens of Art.”
Student presentations also included:
- Mayessa Mitchell, who presented “Hot Media, Hot Theories: Revealing the Popularity of Intersectional Ideologies in Tyler Perry’s ‘The Family That Preys.’”
- Aaron Smith, who presented “Loss of ATM Activates Rac1 and Alters Cell Migration.”
- Brianna Ruth, who presented “A Comparison of Daytime Freshwater Zooplankton Vertical Distribution Among Multiple South-Temperate Lakes.”
- Katelyn Long, who presented “A Demonstration of Learning in a Lemur.”
- Ashleyn (Quinn) Hagen, who presented “William Penn: A Day in the Life.”
Dr. Joanne Altman, director of undergraduate research and creative works, says students who participated in the event appreciated the opportunity to present their research as scholars and received a great educational and networking experience.
“All of these students and their mentors worked really hard at a very busy time of the year, and I am very proud of their accomplishments,” says Altman. “For most of them, this was their first time doing an oral presentation, and they did an excellent job.”
BigSURS hosts the regional undergraduate research symposium each year, which provides undergraduate scholars in all fields a forum to share the results of their work through posters, presentations, performances and works of art.
