HIGH POINT, N.C., July 13, 2015 – Members of High Point University’s Men’s Basketball team and Recreation Services spent the evening with local children at Fairview Family Resource Center for Family Service of the Piedmont’s annual “Boys Night Out” event on July 7.
The HPU students assisted boys aged 10 to 13 with basketball skills and drills, various competitions, free play and life skills workshops to help them make good choices as they enter young adulthood. HPU Men’s Basketball players also displayed some of their dunking skills, signed autographs and served ice cream from the HPU ice cream truck.
“Being able to spend time with the kids meant a lot to me,” says John Brown, HPU basketball player. “I think the younger generation needs people to come and talk to them, especially athletes, because that is who these kids are looking up to. For me to be a part of this community, it is important for us to speak to these kids and be positive role models for them. I look forward to doing more with them in the future.”

“The ‘Boys Night Out’ event was a great success with everyone learning about leadership skills and positive character traits,” says FFRC Program Manager Andrea Dalporto. “In addition to offering guidance in basketball skills, the basketball team’s members did a great job of sharing important life skills with the boys in attendance.”
“We look forward to this event every year,” says Mat Allred, director of recreation services at HPU. “The players shared with the kids the importance of team work, goal setting and achieving your goals through hard work. Most importantly, their message included that without success in the classroom, they could not have success on the basketball court.”
