Student Interns at Horatio Alger Association

HIGH POINT, N.C., July 23, 2015 – High Point University rising junior Blake Pohanka is working with the Horatio Alger Association at her summer internship in her hometown of Alexandria, Virginia.

The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans is a nonprofit organization that honors the achievements of outstanding Americans who have succeeded in spite of adversity and emphasize the importance of higher education. Dr. Nido Qubein, HPU President, was honored with the Horatio Alger Award in 2006.

“It is an honor to intern at an organization that has recognized Dr. Qubein,” says Pohanka, a business entrepreneurship major. “This personal connection ties in the extraordinary values of HPU with the mission of the Horatio Alger Association.”

The organization also grants scholarships and describes itself as the largest provider of need-based scholarships in the United States.

Pohanka’s duties at the organization include administration of scholarships, writing and editing of publications and social media content, and maintaining and updating student files.

“My time with the Horatio Alger Association has been nothing but a positive learning experience,” says Pohanka. “I have gained a great deal of knowledge in several areas, from computer software, to internal research, to the work that goes into operating a nonprofit organization. This internship has opened many doors for me and my dream of creating a company of my own.”
