HPU to Host Acclaimed International Photographer

HIGH POINT, N.C., Aug. 26, 2015 – High Point University will host award-winning photographer Laura El-Tantawy for a presentation of her work at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 9 in the David L. Francis Lecture Hall at Earl N. Phillips School of Business. The event is free and open to the public; tickets are not required.

Born in Worcestershire, England, to Egyptian parents, El-Tantawy grew up in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the U.S. She previously worked as a newspaper photographer for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. Her work has been published and exhibited internationally and has received numerous accolades.

During her presentation, El-Tantawy will speak about her experience as a female photographer and address the role of photographic images as a tool to explore identity and community. She will share works from recent projects, including “In the Shadow of the Pyramids,” a reflection on her Egyptian identity and the events and outcomes of the Arab Spring.

“We are pleased to welcome Laura El-Tantawy to the HPU campus as we engage in a university-wide conversation of ‘Just Communities’ through our Common Experience this year,” says Dr. Jenn Brandt, director of women’s and gender studies. “Her work is well regarded in the international community and will offer a new perspective through which we can all – students, faculty and community members – examine this topic together.”

This event is co-sponsored by the Women’s and Gender Studies Program and the Faculty Cultural Enrichment Grant Series.
