HIGH POINT, N.C., Aug. 20, 2015 – A summer internship in the shipping business is providing High Point University junior Drew Williams with invaluable skills he will use operating his own business one day. The entrepreneurship major from Haddonfield, New Jersey, is a senior operations intern at Transit Systems Inc., a third-party shipping service that specializes in “less than truckload” concierge shipping.
During this experience, Williams has provided analysis and evaluation of services offered by the company, including a special shipping service for students called Cheap College, answered customer calls as a sales support specialist and worked with local movers and packaging stores to transport and pack items.
Williams also got the chance to see the behind-the-scenes operations of the business, including issues management, branding and problem-solving.
“This internship gave me a new appreciation for the daily preparation, self-motivation and work ethic required for my career and taught me many things about owning a business,” Williams says. “I’ve gained invaluable experience by being exposed to so many facets of the company during my 12 weeks. This opportunity stimulated my entrepreneurial spirit and inspired me to start my own company.”
Williams became such a valuable member of the team that he was recognized as the company’s employee of the month in July. He credits HPU with helping him achieve success on the job.
“My business classes at HPU prepared me for what to expect and helped me master the terminology I’d need to be successful,” he says. “I used almost everything I learned in my business communication class – especially the instruction in email etiquette – during the internship.”
