HIGH POINT, N.C., Aug. 27, 2015 – High Point University faculty members and authors Dr. Jacob Paul and Matthew Fiander will be the featured speakers at the first event of the 2015-16 Phoenix Reading Series. The event will be held at 7 p.m. on Sept. 10 in The David L. Francis Lecture Hall at Earl N. Phillips School of Business. It is free and open to the public; tickets are not required.
Paul and Fiander, both faculty in the English department at HPU, will each give readings from their works, followed by a Q&A session, book signing and light reception.
“We are excited to kick off this season, building on the last season’s tremendous energy by bringing an award-winning roster of writers and thinkers from North Carolina and afar,” says Paul, who helps coordinate the Phoenix Reading Series each year.
Paul’s first novel, “Sarah/Sara,” was named one of 2010’s five best first fictions by Poets & Writers. The Public called “A Song of Ilan” (April 2015), his most recent novel, “a remarkable exploration of issues and experiences that are often discounted or outright ignored in American writing today.” A collaborative project and book, “Home for an Hour” (December 2014), which takes place in Greensboro, was also featured in the May/June 2015 issue of Poets & Writers.
Fiander’s writing has appeared in the Yalobusha Review, Waccamaw Journal, Our State Magazine, and elsewhere. He received his bachelor’s degree from Elon University and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
The Phoenix Reading Series and Festival brings a diverse array of writers and thinkers to the HPU campus each year. It is sponsored in part by an HPU Cultural Enrichment Grant.
