HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 14, 2015 – The High Point University Chamber Music Series invites the community to its first concert of the year, to be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 27 in Charles E. Hayworth Memorial Chapel.
The program will include classical flute, piano and organ music honoring Belgian-French composer and organist César Franck (1822–1890) and feature performances by Dr. Robert Hallquist, associate professor of piano, Dr. Laura Stevens, instructor of flute, and Susan Bates, instructor of organ.
This year marks the 125th anniversary of Franck’s death. He is known for his achievements in the realm of French organ music and a handful of other instrumental masterpieces penned relatively late in his career.
“All too often, today’s concert programming shortchanges the extraordinary and diverse beauties of non-Germanic music written during the second half of the 19th century,” says Hallquist. “Our Franck celebration at HPU should therefore be of serious interest to experienced listeners and Franck newcomers alike. This music possesses irresistible beauty and compelling structural integrity.”
